There are a number of homeopathic remedies that can be amazingly helpful to mitigate the trauma of dental surgery.

It is also a good idea to consult a cranial osteopath after dental surgery to release any trauma to the bones of the skull: the bones of the skull should be able to gently expand and contract as the cerebral spinal fluid pumps around the spinal column – after trauma these bones can freeze up causing congestion and issues with the sinuses.

After an extraction it’s important to allow time for the wound to heal and avoid anything that might interfere with this healing process such as hot drinks or sharp crunchy foods.  This is because if the wound is disturbed it can expose the nerve endings leading to a painful condition known as ‘dry socket’.   To help guard against this you could use ‘Hypercal” solution (a combination of homeopathic calendula and hypericum mother tincture) to gently rinse around the mouth several times a day.

Homeopathic Remedy Options

Aconite

Sudden shock or fright as a result of damage to the teeth.

Arnica montana

This remedy relieves pain, bruising and swelling associated with trauma, surgery or overexertion.  It is best given as soon as possible after the patient has come round from the anaesthetic.

Calendula

This remedy is the first to consider for healing of operation wounds as it can help the body overcome inflammation, infection, and abscess. It can be taken internally in potentized form, or used as an herbal tincture. Applied to injured gums and areas around the teeth, the tincture can help reduce the chance of infection, and help the tissues heal after being cut or bruised.

Calc Phos Tissue Salt.

Helps with cell renewal and repair of tissues and bone.

Chamomilla

This remedy is often helpful when a person is hypersensitive to pain and the aftermath of dental work seems intolerable. Chamomilla sometimes works when pain medications have little or no effect, by helping the person’s nerve response become more regulated.

Coffea cruda

This remedy relieves tooth pain triggered by hot drinks and worse at night.

Gelsemium

This remedy can help to ease the apprehension and anxiety that often precede a visit to the dentist. The person may tremble and feel weak from dread, develop a headache (in the back of the head and the muscles of the neck), or feel mentally dull and lethargic.

Emerald

A new remedy which helps people to come to terms with surgery for removal of a body part.  Emerald taken as soon as possible before theatre encourages the body to go through with the excision or extraction.  It helps the person release what is no longer viable or needed.

Eryngium Marítima

Indicated for the prevention of haemorrhage and may be useful when surgery is scheduled for around the full moon when this eventuality is more likely.

Hypericum perforatum

This remedy relieves pain that seems to follow the nerve’s path.  Take as a preventative before the surgeon starts work as well as after the surgery is complete.

Mercurius solubilis

This helps relieve puffy and bleeding gums, and canker sores with a bad taste in the mouth.  A person with a tendency toward tender, bleeding, swollen gums and teeth that easily loosen and decay may benefit from this remedy. Offensive breath, excessive salivation, and swollen glands are other indications. Symptoms are worse at night, and the person is very sensitive to temperatures, both cold and hot.

Phosphorus

This remedy relieves minor bleeding (nose, gums) that tends to occur frequently.  It can also be helpful to detox a general anaesthetic.

Opium

May be needed after a general anaesthetic when the patient does not come round satisfactorily. The patient may appear dopey, sluggish or ‘not with it’ or feel ‘out of body’.

Staphysagria

Emotional trauma of an invasive surgery in the mouth. Also helps with regret over loss of a tooth for cosmetic reasons..
