Homeopathy for Teething

Teething is a significant milestone in your child’s development, with the average age for it to begin being around six months. For some children, teeth emerge with very little discomfort. However, for others, the process can be slow, painful, and distressing—for both child and parent.

If your child’s teething is particularly difficult or prolonged, it may be helpful to consult a professional homeopath, as constitutional remedies tailored to your child’s individual needs might be required. In the meantime, there are several acute homeopathic remedies that may help ease common teething symptoms such as pain, fever, irritability, and excessive salivation.

Chamomilla

Chamomilla is one of the most commonly used remedies for teething. It is especially suited to children who are experiencing intense pain and are extremely irritable as a result. These children are often inconsolable, angry, and unable to tolerate discomfort.

A key characteristic is that the child may demand things and then reject them once offered. They often want to be carried constantly. Other symptoms can include greenish stools with a strong, unpleasant odor (often described as resembling rotten eggs). Symptoms are typically worse between 9pm and midnight.

Aconite

Aconite is indicated when teething symptoms come on suddenly. The child may have a flushed face, a strong urge to chew on objects, and appear fretful or whiny. Sleep may be disturbed, and there is often a noticeable thirst for cold water.

In some cases, the teething discomfort may also be accompanied by a persistent cough.

Belladonna

Belladonna is helpful when teething is associated with fever. The child may have a hot, flushed face, glassy or red eyes, and bright red cheeks. They are often restless, unsettled, and may whine or cry frequently.

There may also be foul-smelling nappies during this time.

Pulsatilla

Pulsatilla is suited to children who are particularly clingy, emotional, and in need of constant comfort and reassurance. These children may cry when not given full attention and often feel better when taken outside into fresh air.

They may also have accompanying cold symptoms, such as thick catarrh. In some cases, there may be discharge from the eyes, often worse on the left side.

Teething can be a challenging phase, but understanding your child’s symptoms and choosing the appropriate support can make a significant difference. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek guidance from a professional homeopath.
